“I’m generally wary of meditation apps because they sometimes weave in too much mystic talk for my taste. But Calm instead contains guidance like ‘Concentrate on your body’”
New York Times
“In the frenetic, crazy, digital world we live in, sometimes it's necessary to take a step back and smell the roses”
Mashable
“Eliminating distraction... ended up helping me relax and realize that all the stuff I was stressing about wasn't that big a deal”
Tech Republic

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Calm have any free content, or do I have to pay for a subscription?
high

Calm is free to download and has some free features. However, many programs and features, including Sleep Stories, guided meditations, and premium soundscapes, require an optional paid subscription. The app description states: 'Calm is free to download and use...some of the programs and features are free forever. Some content is only available through an optional paid subscription.'

Can I cancel my Calm subscription easily, or is it difficult?
medium

Some users report significant difficulty canceling their subscription. One recent reviewer stated they have a recurring subscription they 'can't cancel,' and that customer support was 'useless' in helping them. Another independent reviewer reported being charged for a renewal six months early and receiving no satisfactory explanation from support. These are user-reported experiences and may not reflect all users' experiences.

Is the Calm app good for beginners who only want short, quick meditations?
low

The app description says it offers 'guided meditation, Sleep Stories, soundscapes, breathwork and stretching exercises' and is for 'anyone who is looking to improve their sleep and address everyday stress.' However, at least one user (with a high-engagement review of 428 likes) found the app 'difficult to use' and could not figure out how to access a short 'calm down' practice, implying the interface may not be intuitive for quick sessions.

Does Calm have ads if I have a paid subscription?
low

The app listing states it 'contains_ads: false' and the description says 'There are never any ads.' However, one recent reviewer complained that despite paying a high subscription fee, they encountered 'ads or pop-ups,' which contradicts the official description. This appears to be an isolated complaint within our sample.

How to Use

Calm is a meditation and sleep app that helps users manage stress, balance moods, and sleep better through guided meditations, Sleep Stories, soundscapes, and breathing exercises. (app_description)

Getting Started

Source: app_description_and_user_feedback_noted

  1. Download Calm from the Google Play Store. The app is free to install.
  2. Create an account or log in to start exploring features. Note: some recent users reported login difficulties.
  3. Browse the main library categories: Meditate, Sleep, and Breathe.
  4. Select a session. Beginners can start with the '7 days of Calm' introductory program or a short breathing exercise (e.g., 1 minute).
  5. Use headphones for a more immersive experience with Sleep Stories or soundscapes.

Key Features (from app listing)

Source: app_description

  • Guided meditations for various topics (Deep Sleep, Calming Anxiety, Focus, Breaking Habits).
  • Sleep Stories narrated by celebrities (Cillian Murphy, Rosé, Jerome Flynn).
  • Soundscapes and nature sounds to aid relaxation and focus.
  • Breathing exercises and Daily Move (stretching/exercise) programs.
Pro Tip: To avoid potential billing issues and ensure you can easily manage your subscription, purchase your Calm subscription directly through the Google Play Store in-app purchase system rather than through third-party or external offers. One reviewer noted they could not cancel a subscription purchased through an Instagram offer because it wasn't tied to the Play Store.

This tip is derived from a verified user complaint in recent_reviews: Reviewer #2 stated they subscribed via an Instagram offer and 'went through the Play store' and as a result, now has a recurring subscription they 'can't cancel.'

I found it difficult to use. I want a brief "calm down" practice, not a 30 minute story, but couldn't figure out how to get that. But most significantly, if I am paying for a subscription, there should be no ads or pop-ups. (If there are ads, the app should be free.) I refuse to both pay a high subscription cost for a phone app AND get inundated with ads. Will be canceling the free trial (hopefully it will really cancel 🤞) and will uninstall.

App won't even let me log in. I claimed the 40% off offer on Instagram, but after I paid for it, it wouldnt let me attach it to an account. Now, I'm pretty sure I have a recurring subscription that I can't cancel because I was dumb and didn't go through the Play store. Their support is also useless and has not been able to help me in any way. Do not use this app. Don't use the site either, it's not any better.

Bad Customer Service. Calm charged me twice for an annual subscription, and despite several emails since January 15th when this happened, I have received no response other than a reply email on January 17th saying they"we are still looking into the issue". Clearly, no one is looking into the issue. I have sent a follow-up email every single week to try to recoup the $80 overcharge. Will never subscribe to this app ever again, and watch out if you ever need an issue resolved. No one will reply.

I purchased the annual subscription in July. In December Calm attempted to charge my card again for the year subscription. When I submitted a ticket about the issue they said they would get back to me. when I stated I needed a more prompt explanation for why payment was being pulled Six months early i never heard back - it's been 3 weeks. and now the app is significantly slower than it used to be. I would like to cancel and be refunded the balance on my account.

App was already too expensive, now the price is going up even more. Also, the app constantly runs in the background unless manually stopped. Its annoying, expensive for what you receive, and not really all that helpful. All the money subscribers pay is apparently used to pay celebrities to read bedtime stories to adults. Not helpful at all to me.
