Is YarnPal really free to use? high
YarnPal is free to download, but it includes in-app purchases ranging from $3.99 to $49.99 per item. The app offers some free patterns, but access to more patterns and premium features requires payment.
Source: app_metadata
Can I take a photo of a crochet project and have the app create a pattern from it? low
Based on some user reviews, this advertised feature does not work as described. One reviewer explicitly stated that you cannot snap a photo and create a pattern. Given the limited sample, this feature's functionality is not confirmed.
Source: user_reviews
Is there a daily limit on how many patterns I can access? low
Some recent user feedback indicates a daily limit of 12 patterns. Additionally, patterns you have previously unlocked may need to be unlocked again, consuming more of your daily allowance. The developer does not mention this limit in the app description.
Source: user_reviews
Is YarnPal suitable for absolute beginners? low
It's mixed. The app description promotes beginner courses and step-by-step guides. However, one recent user review claims the pattern instructions are confusing and use 'word salad', while another review highly recommends it for beginners. The sample is too small to draw a firm conclusion.

How to Use
YarnPal is a crochet and knitting learning app that provides step-by-step video tutorials, a library of patterns, project tracking, and a pattern design tool, all intended to guide beginners from their first stitch to creating their own projects. (app_description)
Getting Started
Source: app_description_and_user_feedback_noted
- Download YarnPal from the Google Play Store and open the app.
- Start with the 'Learn Step-by-Step' courses for beginners, which introduce basic stitches.
- Explore the pattern library. Use the filter to find patterns by skill level (e.g., 'Beginner', '10-Min Starter Projects') or category (e.g., amigurumi, wearables).
- Use the row counter feature within a project to automatically track your progress on rows and repeats.
- To design your own, use the 'Pattern Canvas' feature to create and customize a pattern or use the PDF/Web converter to import existing patterns.
Key Features (from app listing)
Source: app_description
- Step-by-step video tutorials with multi-angle views for learning crochet and knitting basics.
- A library of over 500 patterns, organized by skill level and category, with new patterns added weekly.
- Row counter for automatic tracking of rows, rounds, stitches, and repeats.
- Photo identification feature to identify stitches from an image.
- Pattern Canvas to design and customize your own patterns.
- PDF and web pattern converter to import external patterns.
This tip is responsive to a recent user complaint (review #4) that many patterns require more than the 7-day free trial to complete. The app's own description mentions '10-min starter projects,' which are a good alternative for trial users.
How this content was created
Content type: pattern_analysis_of_user_reviews_and_metadata
AI generated: Yes
- Google Play user reviews (5 reviews per app), December 5, 2025 to March 30, 2026
- Google Play ratings distribution
- App Store listing metadata
- Review samples are not statistically representative of all user sentiment; the sample here is very small (5 reviews).
- No high-engagement or mixed reviews were available, so the analysis is heavily biased toward recent opinions.
- Claims labeled 'low confidence' are based on single-review observations only and should not be taken as general user consensus.
- No real-world app testing was conducted.
- Feature availability may vary by region, device, and app version.
- Ratings distribution data was missing, preventing a check of cumulative user sentiment.

Theme 'new free patterns added' identified in recent_review #3. The reviewer notes that new patterns are added to the free selection periodically.
Evidence (1)
“Also, if you're not paying for the patterns and only getting them free, they add some new patterns sometimes so it's not always the same old stuff.”Rating: 5★ March 30, 2026 20 likes
Cons
- The app's advertised features, such as photo-to-pattern identification and AI pattern generation, do not work as promised. low
Theme 'misleading/false advertising' identified in recent_review #5. The reviewer explicitly states that the photo identification and AI pattern generation features do not function, calling the app a 'scam'.
Evidence (1)
“They just lied about everything! I don't know how they managed to get any reviews above 1 star when the app doesn't do any of the things they advertised. No, you cannot snap a pic and create a pattern. No, you cannot generate new patterns based on prompts with their AI tool (you only get a photo of a pattern).”Rating: 1★ December 05, 2025 35 likes - Pattern instructions are confusing and poorly structured for beginners, with missing steps and 'word salad' terminology. low
Theme 'Confusing pattern instructions' identified in recent_review #1. The reviewer states that patterns contain 'word salad', are out of order, and are missing steps.
Evidence (1)
“every pattern comes with instructions that are full of word salad! Things are out of order, steps are missing & when you click the video clips for guidance... it just plays a playlist of all their video clips rather than showing you the specific stitch.”Rating: 2★ February 23, 2026 35 likes - The app has a daily pattern limit (12 per day) that resets, and previously unlocked patterns may require re-unlocking, which consumes the daily limit. low

Evidence (1)
“You are limited to 12 patterns a day and even ones you've unlocked prior days sometimes need to be unlocked again, taking another one from the daily limit.”Rating: 2★ March 09, 2026 18 likes

2★I'm a beginner, and know pretty much nothing about crochet abbreviations, patterns etc. I entered that into the app, and every pattern comes with instructions that are full of word salad! Things are out of order, steps are missing & when you click the video clips for guidance on certain stitches or techniques, the project they are working on in the video doesn't relate to the project you're working on. I'm spending so much time looking up better videos! In summary, its not for beginner beginners.

2★The patterns repeat throughout the tabs. You are limited to 12 patterns a day and even ones you've unlocked prior days sometimes need to be unlocked again, taking another one from the daily limit. New patterns are few and far between it seems. The AI pattern creator leaves a lot to be desired. some cute patterns but if I'm paying for a subscription I expect to have access to all the materials for that subscription.

5★great patterns, you get free or can also pay to get more patterns. it is a great app, I highly recommend it for beginners who want to start crocheting, love this app!!!Also, if you're not paying for the patterns and only getting them free, they add some new patterns sometimes so it's not always the same.🧶🫶🏻

1★UPDATE/Scam: I tried the Sunny Nap pattern. The blanket portion seems unfinished. It takes more than 3 hours to finish. Not Friendly for Newbies. The way they have the patterns set up is horrible, it's all in sentences. Most of the patterns require more than 7 days (free trial) to figure out if the pattern actually works. AI patterns have a tendency to not work properly or at all. The AI picture thing will not work properly, hence why the AI patterns do not work. :(

1★They just lied about everything! I don't know how they managed to get any reviews above 1 star when the app doesn't do any of the things they advertised. No, you cannot snap a pic and create a pattern. No, you cannot generate new patterns based on prompts with their AI tool (you only get a photo of the imaginary item). No, you cannot complete the preloaded patterns because they're also AI generated and will not look like the photo of the finished product. And they're charging people for this?!?!
